Upgrading SSD M2 disk to a larger M2 disk with Clonezilla

I bought a new larger disk and wanted to clone all the data from the old disk to the new one. This can be done easily with many tools however I wanted also to increase the partition size, so it matches the size of the new disk and of course I wanted my Windows 11 still to be bootable and work as always.

Why have I used Clonezilla?

There are a few reasons to use Clonezilla

1. It's free https://clonezilla.org/

2. Can expand the partition on fly at the same time when cloning

3. Does not need Windows to work and I can create a bootable pen drive quickly.

How did I do it?

I had 3 elements:

1. old small disk

2. new larger disk

3. 1 GB pendrive

At first, I downloaded Clonezilla Live from https://clonezilla.org/downloads.php. Then in order to create the bootable pendrive I want trough the steps from their website https://clonezilla.org/liveusb.php. Naturally I needed to reboot the computer, plug in the new disk and start from the pendrive (typically F8 when computer starts or DEL to get into BIOS).

Clonezilla started well and behaved as expected when I used the beginner mode. The only problem was that it cloned all partitions as is and they had the same size as the old ones - it is the default Clonezilla behavior.

Expand the size of the partition when cloning

If you remember I wanted to expand the partition to cover also the new space on the bigger disk while cloning. Fortunately, Clonezilla has an option for that, but you need to select the expert mode and then select the option -k1 to create the partition table proportionally. The steps are covered on their website https://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live/doc/04_Create_Recovery_Clonezilla/advanced/09-advanced-param.php.

That worked as expected, I've changed my disk sucesfully.
